NSBA – the National Snaffle Bit Assoziation – that’s a term that most European allround riders have heard of. In the past, however, NSBA classes were rather an exception than a norm at European horse shows – but that is about to change. The NSBA has big plans for Europe. We talked to Bill Kaven from NSBA who was kind enough to answer all of our questions.
Could you introduce NSBA to our European readers, please?
Established in 1983, the National Snaffle Bit Association has expanded from its roots of the pleasure horse to recognize various disciplines and eight breed associations in competition as well as unregistered horses. NSBA’s mission is to grow the show horse community through various equine programs and events where every activity benefits horses, breeders, owners and exhibitors alike.
The purpose of the National Snaffle Bit Association is to define, promote and improve the quality of the show horse, to promote exhibits, events and contests in expositions and shows; to promote the training of show horses, to promote interest in show horses, and to use and encourage the use of the standard rules for holding and judging contests of the show horse.
NSBA approves over 500 shows each year accounting for nearly 200,000 entries. Shows are approved and held as Dual Approved (class in class with a breed association approved show), NSBA Special Event Show (holding the same classes as Dual Approved but held separate from a breed association approved show) or NSBA Futurity (classes offering guaranteed prize money, these classes can be incorporated with the Dual Approved Show and/or NSBA Special Event Show)
What are the plans for Europe?
NSBA’s goal for Europe is to create a show model that can be replicated in any country allowing exhibitors to have a similar show experience regardless of the country they are competing in. Showing at an NSBA approved event allows exhibitors to earn National Awards, Regional Awards (in development) and Class Awards (when applicable) as well as qualify for the NSBA European Championship Show (in development).
What makes NSBA classes attractive for European riders?
Horse show people all want the same thing, a place to show their horse regardless of the breed, that is held to a higher standard of fair play and rewards their pursuit of excellence. By becoming an NSBA member you will be welcomed into a community of like-minded riders. The rules governing fair play in all aspects of competition are spelled out in the NSBA Official Handbook. All NSBA approved events are to be officiated by an NSBA Judge who must adhere to the judging standards outlined in the NSBA Official Handbook. NSBA Judges are individuals whose equine expertise and personal character merit the honor of becoming an NSBA Judge. NSBA has streamlined the application process for judges that already hold a AQHA and/or APHA judges’ card to readily obtain their NSBA Judges Card.
The show department has simplified the show approval process. New shows need only to fill out the new show application and return it with a copy of their show bill/prize list. NSBA embraces the free-market concept to approving shows and has no mileage restriction on approved events. Show approval is based on the number of judges show management would like to approve and they can choose to hold all breed classes and/or breed specific classes.
Exhibitors can pay one registration and membership and compete in multiple countries, choosing to hold memberships in affiliates association is optional, reducing the cost of showing in multiple countries.
Knowing the importance of verified horse show records for insurance and appraisal purposes, NSBA recently invested to improve its data base that houses NSBA show records and member information. When the upgrade is complete, members will have access to their horse’s entire show history including points and money earned through the member portal.
There are certain NSBA affiliates in Europe already — how will they collaborate with NSBA USA in the future and are there any changes that members of those affiliates need to be aware of?
To our knowledge there are only two associations in Europe that use the NSBA acronym, NSBA Germany and NSBA Scandinavia. NSBA USA is in communication with each association, however, there are no details to share at this time on possible future collaborations. Becoming a member of an international affiliate is a personal decision each member needs to make and not required by NSBA US. Being an international affiliate member, however, does not make exhibitors a member of NSBA USA. In order to compete at an NSBA approved show and take advantage of the NSBA member benefits an exhibitor/owner must be a member of National Snaffle Bit Association, Inc. located in Weatherford, Texas/ incorporated in the USA and the horse they compete on must be registered with the NSBA USA. Existing organizations may choose to approve any show with NSBA Inc. of Weatherford, TX.
Youngster classes and Futurity programs are a big topic in Europe — what does NSBA offer in that aspect?
The National Snaffle Bit Association was founded on classes that focused specifically on young horse development. NSBA’s roots are in the futurity based Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle classes. The idea that young horses should only be trained and shown in a snaffle bit or hackamore gave rise to the associations name when it was founded in 1983. In 1992, NSBA was the first association to create rules and approve Longe Line classes for young horses.
Today NSBA continues this tradition by approving classes like In Hand Trail, Hunter In Hand, Rookie Horse, Green Horsemanship to name a few. If a new class is developed NSBA is quick to include it among approved classes as long as show management publishes the rules and guidelines for their newly developed class. If the new class gains popularity NSBA will develop official rules for all shows to follow.
By approving classes specific to local needs, international show managers are able to provide NSBA benefits from year end high point awards to record keeping along with a national support system to provide standardized rules, guidelines and a network of judges. In addition, NSBA is working with local (European) providers to develop a trophy program similar to what is provided for Futurity classes in the United States.

Aktuell gibt es jährlich mehr als 500 NSBA-Turniere mit nahezu 200.000 Starts. Die Turniere können entweder „dual approved“ sein – die Klassen sind dann class-in-class mit denen des Zuchtverbands – oder als NSBA Special Event ablaufen – dann gibt es die gleichen Klassen wie bei „dual approved“, diese werden aber einzeln durchgeführt – oder als NSBA Futurity: Diese Klassen können ins Dual-Approved-System integriert werden oder im Rahmen der NSBA Special Event Turniere stattfinden; es gibt garantiertes Preisgeld.
Was ist nun für Europa geplant?
In Europa will die NSBA ein Turnier-Modell etablieren, das in jedem Land angewendet werden kann, sodass die Reiterinnen und Reiter ein ähnliches Turnier-Erlebnis haben, egal, in welchem Land sie starten. Wer auf einem NSBA-Turnier startet, kann National Awards, Regional Awards (diese werden noch entwickelt), Class Awards (wenn möglich) gewinnen und sich für das NSBA European Championship qualifizieren – auch das ist aktuell in Entwicklung.
Wieso sind die NSBA-Klassen attraktiv für Europäerinnen und Europäer?
Pferdemenschen wollen alle dasselbe: ein Turnier, auf dem sie ihr Pferd egal welcher Rasse vorstellen können, das an einem hohen Fair-Play-Kodex ausgerichtet ist und exzellente Leistungen belohnt. Als NSBA-Mitglied wird man Teil einer Gruppe von Gleichgesinnten. Unsere Regeln, die sich alle nach dem Fair-Play richten, stehen im NSBA-Regelbuch. Alle NSBA-Turniere werden von einem NSBA-Richter gerichtet, der sich an die Richtlinien aus dem Regelwerk halten muss. NSBA-Richterinnen und Richter sind Menschen, deren Pferde-Wissen und Charakter der hohen Ehre des NSBA-Richteramts entsprechen. Für Richter, die bereits AQHA- oder APHA-Richterkarten haben, verläuft der Prozess, auch bei der NSBA richten zu dürfen, schneller.
Auch der Prozess, wie Turniere zugelassen werden, wurde vereinfacht. Für neue Turniere muss man nun einfach einen Antrag ausfüllen und diesen mit einer Kopie des Zeitplans und einer Auflistung der eventuell ausgeschütteten Preisgelder einschicken. Je nach Preisgeld-Ausschüttung sponsert die NSBA für diese Klassen zusätzliche Trophies. Die NSBA befürwortet die Regeln des freien Markts, wenn es darum geht, neue Turniere zu bewilligen und es gibt kein Kilometer-Limit [Anmerkung d. Red: Unter anderem bei AQHA-Turnieren ist das der Fall] bei NSBA-Turnieren. Es obliegt dem Show-Management, wie viele NSBA-Richter auf dem Turnier zugelassen werden sollen und ob die Klassen komplett rasseoffen oder als Zuchtklassen ausgeschrieben werden.
Reiter zahlen die Registrierung und die Mitgliedschaft und können in mehreren Ländern starten; dies kann die Kosten senken, in mehreren Ländern zu starten. Mitglied eines Affiliates zu werden, ist möglich, aber optional.
Da wir wissen, wie wichtig verifizierte Turnier-Records sind, hat die NSBA kürzlich ihre Datenbank verbessert, in der NSBA-Records und Mitglieder-Informationen zu finden sind. Sobald das Upgrade durch ist, können Mitglieder auf die kompletten Ergebnisse ihrer Pferde zugreifen, Punkte und Preisgeld inklusive.
Du hast bereits erwähnt, dass es Affiliates gibt – wie arbeiten diese mit der NSBA USA zusammen und gibt es Dinge, die Mitglieder dieser Affiliates wissen sollten?
Soweit wir wissen, gibt es die NSBA Scandinavia und die NSBA Germany. Wir stehen in Kontakt, noch gibt es aber keine Informationen zu einer möglichen Zusammenarbeit. Wenn jemand Mitglied eines Affiliates werden möchte, ist das eine persönliche Entscheidung – von der NSBA USA wird es nicht verlangt. Aber Achtung: Wer Mitglied beim Affiliate ist, ist nicht automatisch Mitglied der NSBA USA. Wer an NSBA-approved Turnieren teilnehmen will und die Vorteile für Mitglieder genießen möchte, muss Mitglied der National Snaffle Bit Association, Inc. in Weatherford, Texas, werden und das Pferd muss auch dort registriert werden. Bereits bestehende Verbände können ihre Turniere bei der NSBA USA anerkennen lassen, um NSBA-approved Klassen anzubieten.
Was bietet die NSBA USA im Bereich Futurity und Jungpferde?
Die NSBA wurde eins mit dem Fokus auf Klassen für junge Pferde gegründet. Die Wurzeln hat die NSBA in einem Futurity-Programm für zweijährige und dreijährige Pferde in Western Pleasure und Hunter under Saddle Klassen. Der Name NSBA leitet sich daher ab, dass der Grundgedanke dieser Klassen war, die Pferde im Snaffle Bit oder Bosal vorzustellen und zu trainieren. Die NSBA hat 1992 als erste Organisation Longe Line für Jährlinge und Zweijährige angeboten.
Heute bleibt die NSBA dieser Tradition mit Klassen wie In Hand Trail, Rookie Horse, Green Horsemanship – und das sind nur einige Beispiele – treu. Wenn es neue Klassen gibt, ist die NSBA immer zügig dabei, diese zu integrieren, solange das Show Management Regeln und Richtlinien für die neue Klasse veröffentlicht. Wenn die neue Klasse beliebt ist, wird die NSBA für alle weiteren Turniere Regeln entwickeln.
Da die NSBA Klassen anerkennt, die aus den Gegebenheiten und Wünschen vor Ort entstehen, können internationale Show-Manager NSBA-Vorteile für die High-Points Ende des Jahres anbieten und außerdem ein nationales Support-System entwickeln, um standardisierte Regeln, Richtlinien und ein Richter-Netzwerk zu etablieren. Außerdem arbeitet die NSBA mit europäischen Herstellern zusammen, um Trophies ähnlich denen der Futurity-Klassen in den USA für Europa zu entwickeln.
