If you want to be successful, you have to be a great team with your horse. Well, ideally that is the case. But everyone who has been part of this industry for a while knows that this is not true. There are tons of ways to get a horse to win without treating it like a valued four-legged partner. And while some means of training or enhancing performance are justified, animal welfare and treating the horse right, should always be top priority when it comes to riding horses.
This is why we want to honour those riders who are role models in our industry and treat their show horses with dignity and respect. We will give away a special fairness award at the Q21: It was initiated by The Showlife and is supported by the DQHA. We will honour one Youth and one Amateur or Open equestrian and they will each receive and engraved leather halter by RB Leather. Those halters were sponsored by Vet-E-Motion Sabine Brasche, Naturheilpraxis Maike Lebermann, Ekedie Showclothing and The Showlife.
Who can participate? Riders can fill out a sheet while being in Aachen – either hand-written or online – and suggest people who deserve this kind of award. They can hand in the forms until the middle of the week, afterwards a jury, consisting of one of the stewards, one of the Professional Horsemen and The Showlife, will examine the applications and the stewards will take into account how those people acted in the warm-up etc. in Aachen.
We will announce the winners on Saturday night, right before the awards presentation of the Western Pleasure Futurity.
“It’s a small step and won’t change our industry, we know that,“ TSL senior editor Leonie Küthmann says. “But we want to once again draw everyone’s attention to that topic. I think a ceremony during the final night in Aachen, under the bright lights of the stadium will offer a perfect venue to honour people who stand out because of the way they treat their horses.”

So sollte es idealerweise sein – doch alle, die sich eine Weile im Reitsport bewegen, wissen, dass das nicht immer der Fall ist. Es gibt allerlei Hilfsmittel und Wege, Pferde auch zum Erfolg zu reiten, ohne sie als gleichwertigen Partner zu sehen. Während einige dieser Hilfsmittel sicher ihre Berechtigung haben, sollte der freundliche Umgang mit dem Pferd jedoch immer über allem stehen und die treibende Kraft zum Erfolg sein.
Wir wollen daher herausragende Reiterinnen und Reiter ehren, die durch ihren tierfreundlichen Umgang Vorbilder in unserem Sport sind. Auf der Q21 wird ein spezieller Fairness Award verliehen: Initiiert von The Showlife und in Kooperation mit der DQHA werden jeweils eine jugendliche und eine erwachsene Reiterin geehrt und erhalten als Preis ein graviertes Halfter von RB Leather. Gesponsert werden diese von Vet-E-Motion Sabine Brasche, der Naturheilpraxis Maike Lebermann, Ekedie Showclothing und The Showlife.
Wer wird für den Preis berücksichtigt? Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer können in Aachen ein Formular ausfüllen – entweder als gedrucktes Exemplar oder online. Sie können Personen vorschlagen, die ihrer Meinung nach den Preis verdient hätten. Stichtag ist Mitte der „Q-Woche“. Eine unabhängige Jury bestehend aus einer der Stewards auf der Show, einem Mitglied der DQHA Professional Horsemen und The Showlife wird die eingegangenen Bewerbungen sichten und die Reitweise der Personen, die sich bewerben oder vorgeschlagen werden, auch vor Ort noch einmal unter die Lupe nehmen.
Die zwei glücklichen Gewinnerinnen und Gewinner werden am Samstagabend in Aachen bekanntgegeben, vor der Siegerehrung der Western Pleasure Futurity.
„Das ist zunächst ein kleiner Schritt und wird nicht den Pferdesport von Grund auf verändern, das wissen wir auch bei The Showlife“, sagt TSL-Redakteurin Leonie Küthmann. „Aber wir wollen das Thema gerne in den Fokus rücken und den Gewinnerinnen und Gewinnern dann eine schöne Bühne bieten. Der Samstagabend in Aachen ist immer etwas ganz Besonderes und bietet die entsprechende Kulisse, um Menschen in unserem Sport für ihren Umgang mit dem Pferd zu ehren.“
