Long mane in all-round events – yes or no? This topic is discussed quite frequently and people either love or hate it. We have talked to professional Sandra Görtz who offers banding and braiding at shows and asked for her opinion and advice.
Which horses look good with a long mane and which don’t?
If a horse has a pretty neck, you should show it, no matter if in Halter or Performance events. I am not a big fan of long manes, I only want to see them in Reining classes. I think that even in Ranch Riding a mane that is too long is not beneficial as this is a working class and a long mane might just get tangled up in the reins.
Usually, you see younger horses were a long mane. Is there an age limit? At what point should you cut the mane?
For Halter, I would recommend a mane that is no longer than a hand’s with, until the horse reaches the 3YO class. I would always recommend cutting it even shorter. I feel like the length of the mane has more to do with the event the horse is shown in rather than the age of the horse. If your Western Pleasure horse has no neck movement and a nice topline you can leave the mane long. But as soon as you start to show in Trail, Western Riding etc., any class with a little more movement, you need to cut the mane. It creates a more calm picture of yourself and your horse.
Any advice on taking care of a mane?
It starts with nutrition. Horses with a thin mane, that doesn’t grow easily, usually have a lack in nutrients. Other than that: do not comb the mane too often, use your hands to sort the mane, only use shampoo right before the show and if the hair is very dry, you can use coconut oil for the tips.
What should one remember when banding?
Wash the mane the day before you start banding and do not use conditioner or anything the like. You can use some special spray such as QuickBraid to make it easier to grab the mane.
How much more do people have to pay if they want a long mane to be banded?
I depends on how much time I need. I usually charge 45 Euro for one row of rubber bands on a long mane, that is 15 Euro more than for a classic All-round mane. If you want two rows of bands, I charge 60 Euro. I usually won’t do more than two rows, I have to like the result as well.

Welchen Pferden steht eine lange Mähne, wann sollte man es lieber lassen?
Wenn ein Pferd eine schöne Halsung hat, dann muss man die auch zeigen. Egal ob in der Halter oder in Performance-Klassen. Ich persönlich bin kein Fan langer Mähnen, außer in der Reining. Selbst in der Ranch Riding sollte die Mähne nicht zu lang sein. Ranch Riding ist ja eine Arbeitsklasse und eine lange Mähne würde sich unnötig in den Zügeln verheddern.
Gibt’s eine Art Altersgrenze? Ab wann ist eine lange Mähne bei Allroundpferden eher out?
In der Halter sollte die Mähne bis zur 3YO-Klasse maximal eine Handbreit seit. Ich empfehle jedoch eher kürzer! Für mich ist die Frage der Mähnenlänge unabhängig vom Alter des Pferdes, sondern abhängig von der gerittenen Disziplin.
In den Pleasureklassen, wenn das Pferd eine absolut ruhige Oberlinie hat, dann kann man durchaus auch mit einer langen Mähne reiten. Spätestens im Trail, Western Riding etc, wenn mehr Bewegung ins Pferd kommt, dann gehört die Mähne ab. Das macht den Anblick ruhiger.
Tipps zur Pflege?
Die Pflege fängt bereits bei der Ernährung an. Eine Unterversorgung an Mikronährstoffen ist oftmals Ursache für eine dünne und schlecht wachsende Mähne. Ansonsten: wenig kämmen, lieber einzeln verlesen, selten, nur vor der Show, mit Shampoo waschen und bei sehr trockener Mähne oder Schweifansatz gebe ich gerne Kokosöl in die Spitzen.
Was sollte man beim Flechten beachten, wenn man keinen Profi beauftragen will?
Die Mähne sollte einen Tag vor dem Zöpfeln gewaschen werden, ohne Pflegespülung oder Kur! Für den besseren Halt kann man sie mit Flechtspray besprühen, das macht die Mähne griffiger.
Wie viel teurer ist Banding bei langen Mähnen?
Das kommt auf den Arbeitsumfang an. Ich nehme für eine Reihe Gummis bei langer Mähne 45 Euro, das sind 15 Euro mehr als bei der kurzen Westernmähne. Bei zwei Reihen nehme ich 60 Euro. Mehr Reihen mache ich persönlich nicht. Es muss mir ja auch gefallen.
