Freja Olsen I’m 24 years old and this is my fourth year studying veterinary medicine at the University in Copenhagen. In my spare time, I am driving the three hours I have to our home and stable where I ride my horses and make the show clothes together with the other girls. I love trying new things and experimenting with styles, colors and different shapes. I always try to create something nobody else has, so it will create a reaction in the show ring.
Siri Marie Rasmussen I’m seventeen years old and I still go to school. In my spare time, I ride my horse Senci and – of course – make show clothes. I love bright colours and have made some pieces with pink and red. Right now, I’m working on my new showmanship jacket in red, orange and yellow. It sounds frightening, but I think the sunset colours are going to be awesome. Even though I make my own outfits while having orders, the customers are always my first priority.
Freja Segelund I’m eighteen years old and I’m in the same class as Siri at school. In my spare time, I ride my horse Zexy, work at the local bakery and make show outfits. Right from the beginning, I loved purple, so of course most of my own show outfits are purple. My next project will be a green and yellow bolero and I’m really excited about it.
Michele Schønwald I’m seventeen years old and go to the same school as Siri and Freja. I love to ride my horse Joey and play football with my friends. I have tried making a lot of different colored showoutfits with help from my grandma, but I have been stuck with brown for some years now. Besides from doing orders, I’m working on a turquoise Showmanship jacket, which is entirely new and exciting to me.
When did you start making show clothes as a hobby?
We started around ten years ago – most of us where about 12 years old when we made the first outfit – when we were pretty new in this sport and therefore couldn’t afford buying new outfits every time we grew out of one. The first pieces were in bright colors with around ten stones on it, which at that time were so amazing. Since then, we have been experimenting with lots of styles and colors. We all love to change our outfits often and keep getting new inspiration and ideas to new styles, so during the years we have improved a lot. We make the clothes to relax like others do with a puzzle. It has strengthened our bond to each other and we have so much fun together while sitting in the kitchen at the stable with our projects.
Why did you decide to found a business, AK Showclothing?
Until September 2019, we have only been making the outfits for ourselves and have never thought about making the clothes for others. We had just made our first bolero and were at the Euro Paint when we sent in a picture to The Showlife. From that moment everything changed. Lots of people were writing and asking about the outfits and we decided to make a page on facebook and Instagram for just the outfits. We were blown away by all those nice comments and chose to take custom requests. We sent out the first ones just before Christmas and still have a lot on the way this spring.
How would you describe your style? Do you have any key pieces?
We would describe our style as experimental and full of color. We love to stand out and are looking for that look that will make people turn their heads. We focus on a figure shaping outfit that you can keep looking at and finding new details on. Most of the outfits have a geometric and edgy side combined with some feminine touches. If we should pick one outfit that has a special meaning to most of us, then we would choose the red showmanship outfit. This outfit has been like a lucky charm and it fits almost every one of us. It has won more titles than we can count, and therefore we decided to always keep this as a reminder of all the good times and success we have had through the years.
What was difficult when founding a business?
It’s a big change when you are no longer just making an outfit for yourself but instead for someone else. The base has to fit perfectly which can be hard when you only have some measurement to go from. Some of us have been studying pattern making and we have spent a lot of time designing all of our patterns for the outfits. Besides that, we all have different shapes and measurements so until now one of us has always had the same measurements as the customer. This made it possible for us to try it on a real person and make the necessary changes. Also, it is very hard to live up to our customers’ expectations. When we make the outfits for ourselves, we just do whatever comes to our mind and the final outcome never looks like the original drawing. Luckily, our customers have been really nice and are great at relying on us to make them a beautiful piece.
Do you have any goals you want to achieve with AK Showclothing?
Yes! We are so excited to see our creations in the showring and we love having satisfied, happy customers. It’s definitely special to see something we are so passionate about being spread throughout Europe – but also in the US. We were in Ohio this fall to see the Quarter Congress and there we met up with different outfit store owners who were really interested in our business. We hope to extend our business to USA, but right now we are busy with our custom orders in Europe.

Freja Olsen Ich bin 24 Jahre alt und bin im vierten Jahre meines Tiermedizin-Studiums and the Universität Kopenhagen. In meiner Freizeit fahre ich drei Stunden nachhause und in den Stall, wo ich dann reite und mit den anderen Outfits entwerfe. Ich liebe neue Ideen und experimentiere gerne mit verschiedenen Stilen, Farben und Formen. Ich will immer etwas entwerfen, das niemand sonst hat, damit das Outfit eine Reaktion in der Arena hervorruft.
Siri Marie Rasmussen Ich bin 17 Jahre alt und gehe noch zur Schule. Ich meiner Freizeit reite ich mein Pferd Senci und mache natürlich Outfits. Ich liebe bunte Farben und habe einige Outfits in pink und rot gemacht. Momentan arbeite ich an einem Showmanship Jacket in rot, orange und gelb. Das klingt zunächst komisch, aber diese Sonnenuntergangsfarben werden bestimmt toll. Auch wenn ich manchmal eigene Outfits entwerfe – die Kunden haben immer Vorrang.
Freja Segelund Ich bin 18 Jahre alt und gehe in dieselbe Klasse wie Siri. In meiner Freizeit reite ich mein Pferd Zexy, arbeite in einer Bäckerei und mache Outfits. Ich habe lila von Anfang an geliebt, daher sind viele meiner eigenen Outfits lila. Mein nächstes Projekt ist ein grün-gelber Bolero, darauf freue ich mich sehr.
Michele Schønwald Ich bin 17 Jahre alt und gehe auf dieselbe Schule wie Siri und Freja. Ich liebe es, mein Pferd Joey zu reiten und Fußball mit meinen Freunden zu spielen. Ich habe mit Hilfe meiner Großmutter Outfits in verschiedenen Farben gemacht und bin irgendwie bei Brauntönen hängengeblieben. Abgesehen von den Bestellungen arbeite ich momentan an einem türkisen Showmanship-Outfit – das ist etwas Neues und total aufregend für mich.
Wann habt ihr angefangen, hobbymäßig Outfits zu machen?
Wir haben vor zehn Jahren angefangen – die meisten von uns waren zwölf, als wir das erste Outfit gemacht haben – als wir noch recht neu in diesem Sport waren und uns nicht jedes Mal, wenn wir aus einem rausgewachsen sind, ein neues Outfit leisten konnten. Die allerersten Stücke waren sehr bunt, mit jeweils zehn Steinen darauf. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war das echt toll. Seitdem haben wir mit vielen Stilrichtungen und Farben experimentiert. Wir lieben es, verschiedene Outfits zu tragen und haben ständig neue Ideen, daher haben wir uns über die Jahre stark verbessert. Wir kreieren Outfits zur Entspannung – so wie andere Puzzles machen. Es hat die Freundschaft untereinander gestärkt, dass wir das jetzt zusammen machen, und wir haben so viel Spaß, wenn wir zusammen am Küchentisch sitzen.
Wann habt ihr euch entschieden, das professionell zu machen?
Bis September 2019 haben wir nur Outfits für uns gemacht und gar nicht daran gedacht, das für andere anzubieten. Wir hatten gerade unseren ersten Bolero gemacht und waren auf der Euro Paint, als wir ein Bild an The Showlife gesendet haben. Nachdem The Showlife das Foto gepostet hatte, war alles anders: Viele Leute haben uns geschrieben und nach den Outfits gefragt, also haben wir beschlossen, eine Facebook- und Instagram-Seite für die Outfits zu machen. Wir waren so beeindruckt von all den netten Kommentaren und haben uns entschlossen, maßgeschneiderte Outfits zu machen. Wir haben die ersten Outfits vor Weihnachten rausgeschickt und werden im Frühjahr noch einmal viele auf den Weg schicken.
Wie würdet ihr euren Stil beschreiben? Habt ihr Key Pieces?
Unser Stil ist experimentell und sehr bunt. Wir lieben es, aufzufallen, und wollen einen Look kreieren, der die Aufmerksamkeit der Menschen erregt. Wir achten darauf, dass das Outfit die Figur vorteilhaft formt und dass man immer wieder neue Details entdeckt, wenn man es anschaut. Viele unserer Outfits sind sehr ausgefallen, mit “edgy” Details, aber eben auch femininen Elementen. Wenn wir ein Outfit wählen müssten, das uns sehr am Herzen liegt, wäre es das rote Showmanship Outfit. Es ist ein Glücksbringer und passt fast allen von uns. Es hat unzählige Titel gewonnen und daher haben wir beschlossen, es zu behalten – als Erinnerung an all den Erfolg und die schönen Zeiten, die wir hatten.
Was war schwierig daran, das Ganze professionell aufzuziehen?
Es ist etwas anderes, ein Outfit für einen Kunden zu machen und nicht für sich selbst. Das Outfit muss perfekt passen – was oft schwierig ist, da wir oft nur die Maße haben. Einige von uns, haben viel über Nähmuster und -techniken gelernt und wir nehmen uns viel Zeit, die Outfits zu entwerfen. Abgesehen davon haben wir alle unterschiedliche Figuren und Maße – eine von uns hat also immer ähnliche Maße wie die Kundin. Das macht es leichter, da wir das Outfit dann auch von einer Person anprobieren lassen können und die notwendigen Änderungen vornehmen können. Es ist auch schwierig, die Erwartungen der Kunden zu erfüllen. Wenn wir für uns selber Outfits machen, entwerfen wir, was uns gerade in den Sinn kommt – und das Ergebnis sieht nie aus wie die Zeichnung. Glücklicherweise sind unsere Kunden sehr nett und verlassen sich auf uns, dass wir ihnen ein schönes Outfit zaubern.
Habt ihr noch bestimmte Ziele, die ihr erreichen wollt?
Auf jeden Fall! Wir freuen uns so, unsere Kreationen in der Arena zu sehen und wir lieben es, zufriedene, glücklichen Kundinnen zu haben. Es ist etwas Besonderes, dass eine Sache, die uns so am Herzen liegt, sich nun in ganz Europa verbreitet – aber auch in den Staten. Wir waren im Herbst in Ohio auf dem All American Quarter Horse Congress und haben Ladeninhaber getroffen, die an unseren Outfits interessiert sind. Wir hoffen, dass wir irgendwann in die USA erweitern können, aber aktuell konzentrieren wir uns ganz auf die Bestellungen aus Europa.
