Swiss native Philipp Roos has recently been named Res. Allround Champion L3 Select Amateur at the Silver Dollar Circuit in Las Vegas. Philipp is no stranger to the US AQHA circuit, because he has been competing in both, the US and Europe, for the past years. We took his success as the occasion to interview him about the Silver Dollar Circuit, the perks of Select Amateur classes and the recently born foal out of his mare Invitation Tonite.
The Showlife (TSL): Congratulations on being named Res. Allround Champion L3 Select Amateur at the Silver Dollar Circuit! In which classes did you show and how did you place?
Philipp Roos (PR): Thank you! I showed my 7-year-old mare The Hot Intern in Horsemanship, Trail and Performance Halter. The show consists of two go-rounds with each three judges. I actually do not remember every single placing, but we did very well in Halter and Horsemanship – since my horse is a rather green Trail horse, I was very happy about our rides in this class as well. The classes are big and very competitive – that means, I’m really happy, if I get placed!
TSL: Can you describe the atmosphere at the show? It is probably strange for some Europeans to imagine a show in Las Vegas!
PR: It is special, absolutely! The show is held in a 4-star hotel complex with more than 2000 rooms, a casino, a theatre, cinemas, many restaurants and a spa. The barn with more than a hundred stalls and three indoor arenas is located on the first floor and separated from the rest of the facility with a large door. Only the round pens and the lungeing pen are outside. My room was on the 23rd floor, so I simply took the elevator to the ground floor, walked a few steps and was at the barn! There is a livestream of the show in each room, which makes the timing of your schedule very easy. The casino is next-door and is open 24/7 – and it has everything you would expect from a real Las Vegas casino! Americans usually come to Las Vegas for a few days and party hard! We have been there for ten days and if you didn’t want to, it wasn’t necessary to leave the facility – you could even avoid daylight! Gambling is even a part of the show: You pay into the jackpots and participate in draws. Class winners receive money and many other kinds of prizes, which are all very nice. It’s showtime – and everyone was having a great time! The Las Vegas strip is about four miles from the facility. Everything is possible there! You can board a gondola on your way through the mall of The Venetian or have breakfast at the Eiffel Tower. Everything is fake, but it’s still magic! There are great places to eat and shop and there are many amazing shows and concerts. When we were there, there were Bruno Mars, Jennifer Lopez and Cher concerts. The management of the Silver Dollar Circuit makes sure that the show finishes on time each night, so that people can enjoy Las Vegas – time to make big money!
TSL: You are always successful in the Select division, which is not as popular in Europe as in the US – can you think of any reasons for that?
PR: Many people in the US can’t wait until they’re eligible for the Select classes. Everything is a lot more relaxed and everyone is cheering for each other. Which does not mean that these classes are not competitive! Select Amateur riders in the US own great horses which are staying with the best trainers. Many of the Select Amateurs work out and want to be good riders. I got the impression that the riders in the Youth and Amateur division are probably a little too competitive and do not focus as much on having fun. I sometimes feel like European Select Amateurs are not taken seriously. And maybe some of the riders that are past 50 do not want to face this and therefore do not enter the Select Amateur division – which does not make sense, because people know your age anyway!
TSL: Where do you see advantages of competing in the Select Amateur division?
PR: I think it is more fun to compete against people of your own age. Any 20-year-old that is in shape will do better in Horsemanship or Showmanship than someone like me who is 62. Why competing with this ‚handicap‘ if there are competitive classes for ’seniors‘? Competing in age groups is very common in other sports. And everybody takes it for granted that the youth competitors have their own division.
TSL: While you stayed in the US, your famous mare Invitation Tonite had her first baby by RLBOS. How did you feel staying far away during that important moment?
PR: I was informed about the birth on time. The Jagfeld family did a great job, so there was no need to worry. I am very happy that the filly whose name is Heidi is healthy and that Annie is a great Mum!
TSL: What plans do you have for 2017?
PR: I want to show at the big shows in Kreuth, the European Championship and the Q17 with my 17-year-old gelding Technical Nat Image aka Tech in the all round events and show my stallion Good Luck Only aka Brady in the Western Pleasure. Furthermore I will show at three more shows in the US as well as at the Select World Show and probably at the Congress with The Hot Intern aka Monica.

Philipp, der mittlerweile kein Neuling mehr in der US-Szene ist, hat in den vergangenen Jahren sowohl in Europa, als auch den USA geshowt. Wir haben seinen Erfolg zum Anlass genommen, ihn zum Silver Dollar Circuit, den Vorteilen von Select Klassen und zum ersten Fohlen seiner Stute Invitation Tonite zu interviewen.
The Showlife: Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Reserve Allround Champion Amateur Select Level 3 auf dem Silver Dollar Circuit in Las Vegas! Welche einzelnen Platzierungen haben Sie erreicht?
Philipp Roos (PR): Vielen Dank! Ich habe meine 7-jährige Stute ‚The Hot Intern’ in Horsemanship, Trail und Performance Halter vorgestellt. Der Circuit bestand aus zwei Runden mit je drei Richtern. Ich kann aber nicht alle einzelnen Platzierungen nennen. Es lief ganz besonders gut in Halter, sehr gut in Horsemanship und für das grüne Pferd recht gut in Trail. Die einzelnen Klassen waren groß und das Niveau beachtlich. In diesem Umfeld bin ich schon sehr glücklich, wenn wir platziert werden!
TSL: Können Sie die Atmosphäre auf der Show etwas beschreiben? Ein Turnier in Las Vegas ist ja doch etwas Besonderes!
PR: Ja, absolut. Das Turnier findet in einem 4-Sterne-Hotelkomplex mit mehr als 2000 Zimmern, Casino, Theater, Kinos, vielen Restaurants und Spa statt. Der Stalltrakt mit ein paar hundert Boxen und drei riesigen Indoor-Show-Arenas ist im Parterre und durch eine einfache Türe vom Rest der Anlage getrennt. Einzig die Round-Pens und der Longierplatz sind draußen. Ich gelangte vom Zimmer im 23. Stock mit dem Lift ins Erdgeschoss und von dort mit wenigen Schritten in die Ställe. Das Turnier wird auf zwei Kanälen direkt auf die Bildschirme in den Zimmern übertragen, so dass man recht genau timen kann, wann man wieder runter soll.
Gleich nebenan befindet sich das Casino mit all den Spieltischen, den einarmigen Banditen, viel Bling Bling, Musik und anderen Geräuschen sowie allem, was sonst noch so in eine Spielhölle gehört. Betrieb ist sieben Tage, rund um die Uhr. Die Amerikaner kommen ja meist nur für wenige Tage nach Las Vegas und lassen es dann krachen! Wir waren dagegen zehn Tage dort und wer nicht wollte, musste die Anlage kein einziges Mal verlassen und konnte das Tageslicht die ganze Zeit meiden. Auch auf der Show ist das Spiel mit dabei. Man steuert etwas in die Jackpots bei und nimmt dann an Verlosungen teil. Auch die Platzierten in einzelnen Klassen erhalten Geld und sehr schöne Sachpreise. It’s Showtime! Und alle sind gut drauf!
Der Strip von Las Vegas ist etwa vier Meilen entfernt. Dort ist dann nichts mehr unmöglich. Man kann sich in Gondeln durch das Einkaufszentrum vom ‚The Venetian’ fahren lassen, am Fuße des Eiffelturms frühstücken, oder sich wie ein Pharao in Luxor fühlen. Alles ist fake und doch irgendwie magisch anziehend! In der Stadt isst man vielerorts ausgezeichnet, und wer das Geld nicht im Spiel verlieren will, kann dieses locker in wahnsinnigen Shopping-Tempeln ausgeben. Daneben gibt es tolle Shows. Cirque Du Soleil bietet Megaprogramme in mehr als vier Theatern. Und wer die Ticketpreise stemmen kann, darf Stars ganz nahe live erleben. Während des Silver Dollar Circuits waren Bruno Mars, Cher, Jennifer Lopez, Diana Ross, David Copperfield und viele mehr in der Stadt. Das Management des Silver Dollar Circuits achtet darauf, dass jeden Abend rechtzeitig Schluss ist, damit die TeilnehmerInnen sich von Las Vegas verführen lassen können. Der Rubel soll rollen!
TSL: Sie sind immer sehr erfolgreich in den Select Klassen, die in Europa leider nicht so viele Starter haben. In den USA ist die Menge an Select Reitern aber groß. Was denken Sie, woran das liegt?
PR: In den USA können es viele kaum erwarten, endlich ‚Select’ zu werden. Die Stimmung ist entspannt und man freut sich über die Erfolge der anderen. Dies heisst aber nicht, dass das Leistungsniveau schwach wäre. Die Leute haben meist tolle Pferde bei den besten Trainern im Vollberitt. Sehr viele halten sich fit und wollen im Showring gut sein. Bei den Amateuren und den Youth scheint das kompetitive Element sehr viel ausgeprägter zu sein, was dem Spassfaktor schadet.
In Europa dagegen habe ich manchmal den Eindruck, dass die Select-Leistungen nicht ganz für voll genommen werden. Und einige der Ladies wollen sich selber vielleicht nocht nicht eingestehen, dass sie Ü-50 sind, aber -unter uns gesagt- weiss es trotzdem jeder…
TSL: Wo sehen Sie Vorteile der Select Klassen?
PR: Es ist einfach schöner, sich mit Gleichaltrigen zu messen. In der Showmanship und der Horsemanship kann sich eine fitte 20-jährige Person sicher attraktiver positionieren als ich mit meinen 62. Warum sollte ich mir dieses Handicap antun, wenn es spannende Wettkämpfe für ‚Seniors’ gibt? In vielen anderen Sportarten ist das längst gang und gäbe. Und für die Jugendlichen ist es auch bei uns selbstverständlich, dass sie sich unter ihresgleichen messen.
TSL: Sie waren in den USA, als Ihre Stute Invitation Tonite abgefohlt hat – konnten Sie die Geburt trotzdem verfolgen?
PR: Ich wurde zeitgerecht über die Geburt informiert. Die Jagfelds machen einen super Job und ich musste mir keine Sorgen machen. Ich bin überglücklich, dass das Fohlen ‚Heidi’ gesund und ‚Annie’ eine tolle Mama ist.
TSL: Wie sehen Ihre weiteren Pläne für dieses Turnierjahr aus?
PR: Ich möchte die grossen Turniere in Kreuth, die EM und die Q17 mit meinem 17-jährigen ‚Tech’ in den Allround-Disziplinen reiten und den Hengst ‚Brady’ in den Pleasure-Klassen vorstellen. In den USA plane ich noch drei Shows und dann die Select-World und vielleicht den Congress mit ‚Monica’ (The Hot Intern).
