This is the next part of our series #stallionsunday in which we introduce several European allround stallions. The one that we wanted to know a little more about this time is a stallion that has been living in Europe for only a few months: Chocolate After Dark. Rikke Benjaminsen and Bernhard Schießl who run RB Show Horses purchased the stallion. Chocolate After Dark is by Chips Hot Chocolate out of Invite Me After Dark. Rikke shared some more information about this seven-year-old AQHA stallion.
Can you tell a little bit more about Chocolate After Dark?
Well, where to start, there is so much to say about him! First of all his barnname is “Elvis” – that fits him very well since he is a really cool guy! His pedigree is full of famous horses like: Chips Hot Chocolate, Zips Chocolate Chip, Potential Career, Invitation Only and so on. Elvis was born in 2013 and raised in Texas at Casa De Los Cielo Ranch, they own both his Sire Chips Hot Chocolate and dam, both of them still live at the ranch. It was great to see both of them live when we went there in November 2019. Elvis had lived his whole life at the ranch until he moved to our place in January 2020. All in all, Elvis just has everything we want in a breeding stallion! Not only looks, movement, talent and conformation, but his mind really amazes us and we think the biggest goal should be to breed good -minded foals; foals that will turn into horses and become a pleasure for any Youth or Amateur rider, not only in the show pen but also in daily life.
Why did you decide to buy a stallion?
Actually it wasn’t really planned, we have been talking about it quite often and said, that if the right stallion came around, we would definitely consider it, but before we went to visit Max and Mari Guerri at Casa De Los Cielo in November, we weren’t expecting that outcome!
Why was it him and not any other stallion?
Well, the choice wasn’t hard! Sounds crazy, but it was definitely love at first ride – for both of us. Elvis just took us by storm, I have never met a horse like him, for me he is the closest to perfect, not only is he beautiful, a great mover, correct conformation, friendly and good-minded, but he has got that special thing, a horse that just touches your soul. When we left the ranch, we just couldn’t get him out of our minds and we just knew he was the one!
What does a normal day with him look like at the moment? Are you planning on showing him?
At the moment, Elvis is living the good life at our place, light workouts, chillin‘ in the sun on his pasture, eating lots – he loves carrots – and going to the breeding station for frozen semen. To work with Elvis is always a real pleasure, he is so trainable, always giving his best, no matter if your training or just fooling around with him. The plan is to show him next year for sure! That will be his first year of showing and we are really excited about it already!
Are any European mares bred to him already?
We are really overwhelmed by the support and interest in Elvis and we truly hadn’t expected that so fast. It is so amazing that a lot of people booked their mares to Elvis already. We will of course be breeding our three own mares to him as well. It will be so exciting to see his first foal croup next spring!

Rikke Benjaminsen und Bernhard Schießl von RB Show Horses haben den Hengst von Chips Hot Chocolate vor wenigen Monaten gekauft und uns erzählt, wie es dazu kam.
Rikke, erzähl uns ein wenig mehr über Chocolate After Dark.
Wo soll ich anfangen, es gibt so viel zu sagen. Also, erstens: Sein Rufname ist Elvis – das passt sehr gut, denn er ist ein cooler Typ, genau wie Elvis. Auf seinem Papier findet man bekannte Namen wie Chips Hot Chocolate, Zips Chocolate Chip, Potential Career, Invitation Only… Elvis wurde 2013 in Texas auf der Casa De Los Cielos Ranch geboren und ist dort auch aufgewachsen. Seine Eltern Chips Hot Chocolate und Invite Me After Dark leben immer noch dort. Es war toll, beide live zu sehen, als wir im November 2019 dort zu Besuch waren. Elvis hat bis Januar 2020, als er zu uns gezogen ist, auf dieser Ranch in Texas gelebt. Für uns hat er alles, was ein guter Deckhengst braucht: nicht nur Aussehen, gute Gänge, Talent und ein gutes Gebäude, sondern auch einen tollen Charakter, den wir lieben. Für uns ist das größte Ziel, Pferde zu züchten, die klar im Kopf sind und Youth- und Amateur-Reitern Freude machen – nicht nur auf dem Turnier, sondern auch im Alltag.
Wieso habt ihr euch entschieden, einen Deckhengst zu kaufen?
Das war eigentlich nicht geplant. Wir haben oft gesagt, dass wir es in Erwägung ziehen würden, wenn der richtige Hengst um die Ecke kommt, aber bevor wir Max und Mari Guerri auf Casa De Los Cielos besucht haben, haben wir nicht daran gedacht, dass das das Ergebnis sein könnte.
Wieso ausgerechnet er und kein anderer Hengst?
Die Wahl fiel uns nicht schwer! Das hört sich verrückt an, aber es war sozusagen Liebe auf den ersten Ritt – für uns beide. Elvis hat unser Herz im Sturm erobert. Ich habe noch nie ein Pferd wie ihn getroffen, für mich ist er nahezu perfekt. Er ist nicht nur wunderschön, ein toller Beweger mit gutem Gebäude und freundlich, er hat auch dieses gewisse Etwas – das Pferd löst irgendetwas in der Seele aus. Als wir die Ranch verließen, konnten wir nur an ihn denken und wussten, dass er der Eine ist.
Wie sieht sein Alltag momentan aus? Werdet ihr ihn auch showen?
Momentan genießt Elvis sein Leben in vollen Zügen: ein wenig Training, in der Sonne chillen, viel essen – er liebt Karotten – und auf Deckstation fahren, damit es dann Gefriersamen gibt. Mit ihm zu arbeiten, macht immer Spaß, er ist leicht trainierbar, gibt immer sein Bestes – egal, ob man arbeitet oder bloß zum Spaß drauf sitzt. Wir wollen ihn nächstes Jahr auf jeden Fall showen. Das wäre sein erstes Showjahr und wir freuen uns jetzt schon!
Gibt es schon europäische Stuten, die von ihm gedeckt wurden?
Wir freuen uns über die positive Resonanz und das Interesse an Elvis. Damit haben wir so schnell nicht gerechnet. Es ist toll, dass mehrere Leute ihre Stuten schon von Elvis decken lassen wollen. Unsere eigenen drei Stuten werden natürlich auch von ihm gedeckt. Wir freuen uns jetzt schon auf die ersten Fohlen im kommenden Frühjahr!
